When Do ISEB, IGCSE, GCSE and A Level Exams Take Place in the UK?

Exam timetables for ISEB, GCSE, IGCSE and A Level qualifications in the UK are released by each exam board — including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC (Eduqas) and Cambridge International. Most written exams take place during the main summer exam series (May to June), while resit and international sessions are often available in October–November or January depending on the board and subject.

Private and external candidates at ExamCentre.org receive a Statement of Entry before the exams to confirm their sittings. For the most up-to-date GCSE, IGCSE and A Level exam dates, visit your exam board’s official timetable page.

Click here to see a list of exam board websites.

When are the exam entry deadlines for GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level private candidates in the UK?

Exam entry deadlines vary by exam board and qualification level, but most AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas and Cambridge International entries must be submitted several months before the exam session begins.
For example, summer exam entries typically close between January and mid-February, while autumn or November retake deadlines are usually in September.

Private and external candidates should book early with their exam centre to avoid late entry fees and ensure subject availability — especially for science practicals, language orals and coursework components.

Click here to see a list of exam board websites.

When is the exam entry deadline for private and external candidates in the UK?

The exam entry deadline for private and external candidates at ExamCentre.org is one week before the official deadline set by each exam board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, and Cambridge International).

We recommend booking your exams as early as possible—especially for the Summer 2026 exam series—as spaces are limited and demand for popular subjects like Maths, English, Biology, and Chemistry is already high.

Early exam entry normally ensures your place, ensures accurate processing of your GCSE, IGCSE, and A Level exam registrations, and avoids late fees charged by the exam boards.
For the latest official entry deadlines, please refer directly to your chosen exam board’s website or contact our support team for personalised booking advice.

I failed my exams. Can I retake my GCSE, IGCSE or A-Level exams as a private candidate?

Yes — most GCSE, IGCSE, and A-Level subjects can be retaken or resat through a select few approved UK private candidate exam centre such as ExamCentre.org. If you didn’t achieve your desired results, you can book an exam resit or retake with the same or a different exam board.

We accept exam retake registrations for AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, and Cambridge International across all major subjects, including Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Business Studies, Economics, Law, and Computer Science.

Some A-Level and GCSE exams can only be retaken during the Summer series, while others — especially Cambridge IGCSE exams — may be available in both Summer and Winter sessions. Always confirm your specific subject availability directly with the relevant exam board. Private and external candidates can register for exam retakes UK-wide, including GCSE resits, A-Level retakes, and IGCSE exam re-entries. Can you give me advice on which exams to book?

Exam Centres, such as examcentre.org, do not provide specific advice on which subjects, exam boards, or qualifications to choose. This guidance is best obtained from your school teacher, subject tutor, or the exam board directly.

For official subject codes, exam timetables, and entry deadlines, please visit your chosen exam board’s website. The following keywords will help you:

  • AQA – exam dates, subject lists, and codes for GCSE & A-Level
  • Edexcel / Pearson – international GCSE and A-Level timetable and subject options
  • OCR – subject codes, specifications, and exam windows
  • WJEC / Eduqas – exam timetables and subject registration information
  • Cambridge International (CAIE) – IGCSE and International A-Level exam schedules

You can find full exam timetables, unit codes, and syllabus references directly on each exam board’s website. Use the following search words online to view subject codes for your chosen qualifications:

Can I book only the written papers for A Level Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)?

Yes, you can – but it depends on your circumstances.

  • Yes — private candidates through ExamCentre.org can often book A Level Science written papers only, depending on individual circumstances and previous results.
  • If you are a resitting A Level candidate and have already achieved a pass in the science practical endorsement from a previous exam session (for example with AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, or Cambridge International), you are eligible to book written papers only for your chosen A Level Biology, A Level Chemistry, or A Level Physics subject.
When booking, you must upload official proof of your previous practical result (shown on your A Level certificate or Statement of Results) to confirm eligibility.
  • If you are sitting A Level Science exams for the first time — including AQA A Level Biology, Edexcel A Level Chemistry, OCR A Level Physics, WJEC/Eduqas A Level Biology, or Cambridge International A Level Chemistry/Physics — you are required to book both the written exam papers and the practical endorsement together.

Please note that A Level entries on our private candidate booking form are charged per written paper.

For full details on A Level Science exam booking options, practical endorsement rules, and exam entry requirements for private candidates, visit examcentre.org/summer-form

Can I Sit A Level Science Exams Without Doing the Practical?

If you are a first-time private candidate and have not yet completed the A Level Science practicals, the examcentre.org requires that you book both the practical endorsement and written examination papers together. Please use the following secure booking form to register:
www.examcentre.org/summer-form

If you have already completed your practical endorsements, you may book the written papers only for your chosen A Level Biology, A Level Chemistry or A Level Physics specification. When booking, please upload your official A Level practical results or endorsement certificate together with valid photo ID to confirm eligibility.

Before registering, ensure that your course codes, exam board entries and practical endorsement requirements are verified directly with your chosen board — AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas or Cambridge International — as each board sets its own eligibility rules and component structure.

Can I take GCSE Science exams as a private candidate in the UK as a first timer?

Most UK exam boards do not permit private candidates to sit GCSE Science exams because these qualifications include compulsory practical assessments and internal coursework that require school-based supervision. However, private students still have excellent alternatives.

The preferred route is to register for IGCSE Science with either Cambridge International (CAIE) or Pearson Edexcel International, which both offer 100% written assessment options — meaning no laboratory practicals are required. You can choose from IGCSE Biology, IGCSE Chemistry, IGCSE Physics, or Combined Science, depending on your study level and university requirements. These exams can be taken at approved UK private exam centres such as ExamCentre.org, which accepts external and home-educated candidates for all major boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas, and Cambridge International)..

Can I retake GCSE Science exams as a private candidate in the UK?

If you are retaking a GCSE or IGCSE Science exam, and your exam board allows you to reuse previous coursework or practical endorsement results, we can accommodate your retake booking at our UK exam centre. This applies to summer and winter exam series for both GCSE Science resits and IGCSE Science retakes across all major boards.

If you are unable to prove your practical element (i.e. that it has already been taken) the preferred route is to register for IGCSE Science with Pearson Edexcel International or Cambridge International (CAIE), both of which offer a 100% written assessment  – meaning you do not need a laboratory practicals.

Whether you need to book IGCSE Physics Edexcel retake, IGCSE Biology Cambridge resit, or arrange private candidate Science exam entry UK, ExamCentre.org provides the exam booking options.

Do you offer oral exams for A Level, IGCSE and GCSE languages?

Can I take Edexcel International A Level exams at your centre?

Edexcel International A Level (IAL) exams are not currently available for private candidates within the United Kingdom. These qualifications are designed for international schools and exam centres outside the UK.

If you are a UK-based private or external candidate, you can instead register for Edexcel A Level exams or other UK A Level qualifications offered by AQA, OCR, WJEC / Eduqas, or Cambridge International (CAIE).
